Woodville Elementary School hosts Literacy and Wellness Fair

On May 2, Woodville Elementary School Parent Council, with the help from staff, hosted the school’s first-ever Literacy and Wellness Fair.

During the after-school event, attendees had the opportunity to hear from the school’s teaching and learning coach, Mrs. Addison, who presented an easy-to-understand model of what learning to read looks like in today’s classrooms and what parents/guardians can be doing to help their student(s) at home.

Following the presentation, tables were set up around the gym with both staff and student volunteers ready to speak to the materials that were on each table. The first third of the gym had foundational literacy materials focusing on early readers and reading skills; the middle tables focused on junior and intermediate morphology, vocabulary building, and fluency activities; and the last third of the gym tables focused on mental health strategies with hands-on activities.

“The Literacy and Wellness Fair provided us with a platform to show parents/guardians simple resources and activities to learn and grow, and expand their understanding of health and wellness,” said WES principal, Sharon Nielsen. “The event fostered a sense of community, providing a supportive environment where we could connect with like-minded peers, exchange ideas, and find encouragement on our wellness journey.”

Each attendee left with their arms full of practical resources to help their student build their literacy and mental health skills.
