Future builders showcase skills at TLDSB Elementary Construction Competition

The future of the construction industry in Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) looks bright after a successful and engaging Elementary Skills Ontario Construction Competition that took place on April 9 at I.E. Weldon Secondary School (IEWSS).

In teams of four, talented Grade 7 and 8 students from across the region put their design and building prowess to the test, tasked with creating the best scale model of a house using provided tools and materials within a given amount of time.

The competition challenged students to not only construct a structurally sound model, but also to consider design, functionality, and adherence to specific criteria outlined by the judging panel.
“It’s fantastic to see these young students so engaged in hands-on learning,” commented TLDSB experiential learning consultant, Katie Albisser. “They’re developing valuable skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and attention to detail – all crucial in the construction trades and many other fields.”

While the competition fostered a spirit of friendly rivalry, the primary focus was on the learning experience. “This event provides a wonderful opportunity for our elementary students to explore the world of skilled trades in a fun and engaging way,” said TLDSB technology education consultant, Steve Spiers. “It helps them understand the principles of design and construction, and potentially sparks an interest in future careers they might not have considered otherwise.”
At the end of the day, after much deliberation, the judging panel, comprised of technology education teachers announced the top three teams:

  • First place team – Fenelon Township Public School: Bryanah Gruntz, Audrey Page, Andy Ramsay, and Landon Urquhart
  • Second place team – Mariposa Elementary School: Carson Durward, Harper Farquhar, Jake Hollinger, and Zoe Keeble
  • Third place team – Rolling Hills Public School: Madison Cochrane, Lexi Malcolm, Emma Morrow, Aven Prodan

The first place team will represent TLDSB at the Provincial Skills Ontario Competition in Toronto in May.

The TLDSB Pathways Team would like to extend a huge thank you to IEWSS technology teacher, Jordan Batty, and his team at the school for all the hard work and organization that went into hosting this event. We also would like to thank all the wonderful intermediate educators and parent/guardian volunteers. Finally, a tremendous thank you to the Home Builders Associations and community business owners that generously donated materials and prizes.
