Woodville Elementary School (WES) recently took part in a Shoe Drive to support BioPed Lindsay and those in need.
Since 2015, BioPed Lindsay, in partnership with Soles4Souls Canada, has been collecting gently used footwear for developing countries to support poverty through the Micro Enterprise Program. This year, BioPed reached out to WES for their participation.
The initiative was spearheaded by Grade 8 teacher, Tanya Farr, to align with the class’ clothing drive, and took place from March 3 to April 19. All students and staff were invited to participate by bringing in gently used footwear.
In total the school brought in 1,200 pairs of shoes, with Mr. Watt’s Grade 4 and 5 class donating the most pairs of shoes (385!) and winning a pizza lunch!
“I feel the students really beamed with pride to be able to donate shoes that no longer fit them to help out people in need,” said WES principal, Sharon Nielsen. “They enjoyed the friendly competition, but above all were in amazement at just how many shoes classes were able to bring in and donate.”
“As a Grade 8 teacher, I have a responsibility to ensure my students are ready for high school. To me, this of course means academically; but I also have a responsibility to build character and confidence in my students. I am always seeking alternative opportunities and ways to build these qualities,” explained Farr. “The Soules4Souls initiative provided my class with many leadership opportunities while building empathy and character through some healthy competition amongst the entire school community. I am super proud of my students for their commitment to helping others and making WES first year a tremendous success.”
