About

Perhaps most famous as “the town in North Ontario” Neil Young sings about in his classic song “Helpless,” Omemee gets its name from the Ojibwa word for “pigeon.” Neil Young spent his formative years here in this town on the banks of a river surrounded by hills and farmland. With a population of roughly 1,319 people, Omemee is situated close to the Emily Provincial Park. Notable attractions include Omemee Beach, Pioneer Days, and the annual Santa Claus Parade.

Scott Young Public School (SYPS) opened in September 1993. It is named after a famous local resident, author, and former Toronto Star and Globe and Mail columnist, Scott Young, father to Neil Young.

The school was built to try and alleviate overcrowding in some neighbouring elementary schools particularly, Lady Eaton Public School. As a result SYPS houses Grade 4 to 8 students, while Lady Eaton retains the Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 students of the region.

SYPS is a very attractive school with specialized science, music, and art classrooms, as well as a large gymnasium and beautiful library. The school mascot is the Scottish Terrier, chosen for its intelligence and tenacity.

The first principal of SYPS (1993-1997) was Mr. Dave Allen. He was responsible for some of the design elements of the building, as well as its unique partial rotary timetable in both junior and intermediate grades.

At SYPS, we value a balanced approach to education, emphasizing not only traditional academic subjects, but also technology, art, music, and a range of extra-curricular activities.
